Cyrano

End Title Sequence

  • CGI / Animation
  • Film
  • Type Design

HS was invited by Director, Joe Wright, to create a closing title sequence for his critically acclaimed film ‘Cyrano’. Based on the exchange of handwritten letters between the film’s main protagonists, the sequence is intended to serve as a thread of memories and feelings, expressed through the written word.

Fragments of letters, sentences and words gradually emerge onto the void of the paper, like memories permeating through the surface.

Created entirely in CGI, the Hingston team undertook an extensive research and development process to define optimum paper textures and thicknesses, as well as an animation approach for the ink and letterforms themselves. It was essential to convey the notion of something dreamlike, whilst retaining real world believability. A bespoke cut of Garamond was used for the titles – a subtle nod to the story’s 17th century provenance.
